May is Masturbation Month
Let the stress relief begin!
That’s right, there is a whole month dedicated not only to awareness, but practice of masturbation. You might be wondering, where has this been all my life? Well masturbation month started in 1994 with the resignation of US Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders. She is attributed as saying:
“As per your specific question in regard to masturbation, I think that is something that is a part of human sexuality and it’s a part of something that perhaps should be taught. But we’ve not even taught our children the very basics.”
Her resignation brought about a reaction 1995 by adult shop Good Vibrations who unilaterally declared May masturbation month. And so it became.
Masturbation may according to clevelandclinic.org:
- Reduce stress
- Relieve tension
- Improve sleep
- Increase your focus
- Boost your mood
- Alleviate aches and pain
- Enhance your sex life
- Prevent anxiety and depression
- Lower the chance of prostate cancer
- Relieve menstrual cramps
- Increase women’s chances of orgasm during sex
The downsides may include:
- Compulsive sexual behavior
- Decreased sexual sensitivity
- Addiction- dopamine and oxytocin are hormones/neurotransmitters, but like any other drug they can become addictive
- Guilt- some feel a sense of religious revulsion towards masturbation. However, from a strictly Christian perspective sexual immorality only happens if you do it outside of marriage, so masturbation to/for/with your spouse would not technically be a sin.
